A CHRISTIAN RESPONSE – USING YOUR TONGUE IN A GODLY WAY

DEATH AND LIFE ARE IN THE POWER OF THE TONGUE:

AND THEY THAT LOVE IT SHALL EAT THE FRUIT THEREOF – PROVERBS 18:21

Sometimes as Christians, we need to be reminded that our words can either build up or tear down. It’s not uncommon to see this lost and dying world use the tongue to do evil things, but I hope that your heart breaks as mine does when you hear a Christian use their tongue for tearing down instead of building up. We have all done it to one degree or another, but the fact remains that whether it was little in our own eyes… to our LORD sin is sin.

My Prayer is that you would be blessed by this study, that it would help establish you, that it would grow you in a way that is pleasing to our Father and your church family.

Exodus 23:1 – Thou shalt not raise a false report: put not thine hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.

Psalms 34:13 – Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.

Psalms 101:5 – Whoso privily slandereth his neighbour, him will I cut off: him that hath an high look and a proud heart will not I suffer.

Proverbs 6:16-19 – These six [things] doth the LORD hate: yea, seven [are] an abomination unto him:  A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness [that] speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

Proverbs 10:18 – He that hideth hatred [with] lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, [is] a fool.

Proverbs 11:13 – A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.

Proverbs 12:17-19 – He that speaketh truth sheweth forth righteousness: but a false witness deceit. There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health. The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment.

Proverbs 15:2-4 – The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness. The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good. A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.

Proverbs 16:28 – A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends.

Proverbs 17:4 – A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; [and] a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.

Proverbs 17:9 – He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth [very] friends.

Proverbs 18:7-8 – A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul. The words of a talebearer [are] as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

Proverbs 18:13 – He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.

Proverbs 20:19 – He that goeth about [as] a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.

Proverbs 21:23 – Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.

Proverbs 26:20 – Where no wood is, [there] the fire goeth out: so where [there is] no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.

Matthew 12:36 – But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

Ephesians 4:29 – Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

1 Timothy 5:13 – And withal they learn [to be] idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.

2 Timothy 2:16 – But shun profane [and] vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

Titus 3:2 – To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, [but] gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.

James 1:26 – If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion [is] vain.

James 3:2-12 – For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: but the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.

James 4:11 – Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of [his] brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge
